The examen civique has 40 questions and a maximum of 45 minutes. You need 32 correct answers in CSP, CR and NAT. There are 28 knowledge questions and 12 scenarios. The application’s language requirements are A2 for CSP, B1 for CR and B2 for NAT, subject to applicable exemptions. The civic exam is separate from your application’s French-language requirement. CR certification can also be used for CSP.

The CCSE test has 25 questions in five tasks and lasts 45 minutes. You need at least 15 correct answers. It combines three-option and true-or-false questions. Instituto Cervantes updates its manual each year; use the edition for your exam date. An adapted version exists for candidates who cannot read or write.

Your N-400 filing date determines the version: before 20 October 2025, the 2008 test (10 questions, 6 correct); on or after that date, the 2025 test (up to 20 questions, 12 correct; stops at 12 correct or 9 incorrect). It is an oral interview in English unless an exception applies. The 65/20 rule uses a special bank of 20 questions: 10 are asked and 6 correct answers are required. The 50/20 and 55/15 exceptions depend on age and years as a permanent resident; check USCIS. Local officeholder answers depend on your state and the date.
